Situated 2 1/2 hours north of Los Angeles, near Bakersfield in the beautiful little mountain valley of Walker's Basin.  It sits at 3,500 ft in the lower southern California Sierras.  This is very much a family run ranch, six generations of Rankins have run this ranch.  2 rides a day except Sundays.  14 cabins surrounded by oaks and pines.  Air conditioning and large picture windows plus private bathrooms.  Meals are taken in the main lodge with the emphasis on home cookings.  Extra activities include heated pool, hot tub, tennis court plus a stocked pond for fishing.  Evening entertainment includes western dancing to talent show.  Open March to October.  Any day start.  Destination Airport : Los Angeles or Bakersfield.  No riding on first day. Genuine 4500 acre cattle ranch is set at 6500 feet in the High Sierras; this is gold rush country and the nearby ghost town of Bodie which sprung up when gold was discovered in 1859.  The ranch was founded two years later by Esther and Napoleon Bonaparte Hunewill, and today attracts people who prefer the simplicity and informality of a working cattle operation.  Riding is the main activity and rides and horses are available to suit all levels of horsemanship.  Open May to September.  Saturday to Saturday.  Destination airport : Reno.   November - Cattle drive.  Max Guests : 40

3.  GREENHORN CREEK GUEST RANCH

Located in the beautiful north eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, just 3 hours north of Sacramento, 90 minutes north of Reno, this ranch covers over 600 acres and is surrounded on three sides by the Plumas National Forest. The elevation is 4500 feet and they ride up to around 6500 feet where the vistas are spectacular. You may choose from several cabins and lodge rooms. There are 8 one-bedroomed cabins that will sleep 1- 4 guests, 8 two-bedroomed cabins that will sleep 4-7 guests. All cabins have a porch swing overlooking the ranch. They also have 8 rooms upstairs in the lodge that will sleep up to 3 guests. Some lodge rooms have adjoining doors, if you want to put the kids next door and still have access to them. All cabins and rooms have full western accommodation, each has it's own bathroom.  They include daily housekeeping service. The horses are hand picked to make sure that they are perfect for trail rides, and each one has it's own unique personality.  They will assign a horse to you based on your riding ability.    They have the "Kiddie Corral" programme for ages 3 to 5 years. 

 Some meals are served in the country style chuck house where you will dine with the family and, whether you're eating in the chuck house or out on the trail, you can count on plenty of great western chow .  In the evening there's still plenty to do -either a Barn Dance to be enjoyed or if relaxation is more what you had in mind, they have  got a special section in the dance hall building set aside just for reading, or maybe some card playing.  You may also want to relax around the heated pool or in the hot tub. Of course, there's also a game room equipped with ping pong, pool table and video games that will keep you and your kids happy for hours.  The sounds of music and laughter fill the air as you make your way to the Dance Hall and Saloon. Here you will find the beer, wine and soda saloon .
