A frontier world of mountains and ranches, hunting and trapping rodeos and round-ups.  Wyoming is nicknamed "The Cowboy State" because for more than a century cattle raising has been the main occupation.

It still takes a rider on horseback to herd cattle, in the cowboy towns most people wear stetsons, blue jeans and boots, and stores have hitching posts for the horses.  Yellowstone, the world's first national park with it's famous geysers, hot springs, mudpots, waterfalls and mountains has Location of Wyoming ranches belowenthralled travellers since 1872.  A further week is recommended touring in a car in Wyoming or driving over to South Dakota.

SPOTTED HORSE RANCH, WYOMING - NEW FOR 2008   

   

Just 28 miles south of town of Jackson Hole is the Spotted Horse Ranch, a small Guest Ranch accommodating just 34 visitors. Explore the wilderness surrounding the Ranch through a float trip, horseback ride, overnight trip or a hike. Individual cabins are of log construction with the modern conveniences of home. The ranch is home for the famous Appaloosa Horse. Bred originally by the Nez Perce Indians..  Excellent guides can help you in selecting the perfect horse for your ability.  Fish along the banks of the Hoback, only steps away from your cabin, also practice in the trout pond or take a float trip down the Snake, Hoback, Salt, New Fork or Green River.  Rates include a white water or scenic raft trip, the rodoe in town on a Saturday night in summer, two cookouts with live entertainment, fly casting lessons, beer and wine during appertizers and a trip to Granite Hot Springs. .

1.  RANGER CREEK GUEST RANCH, SHELL                     

                        

 

 

 

 

This ranch is set in the spectacular Big Horn Mountains in north central Wyoming. The road up from the Shell Valley winds around the sides of the pass, do stop and admire Shell Falls on your way up to the ranch. At 8300ft give yourself time to acclimatise to the height – they ride to over 10,000ft. The property is on National Forest land and so it is totally unspoilt, the views are truly stunning. They have the ability to ride over a million and a half acres ! Around the lodge are five 2 to 5 berth rustic cabins with en-suite facilities. Meals are a highlight of your stay - gourmet cooking is on the menu. Taking a horse out from the ranch in any direction will put you in the most diverse and beautiful terrain. During the summer, there are rafting trips and a visit to the Cody Night Rodeo plus mountain biking, hiking, fishing, a halter making workshop, evening campfires with entertainers. Open from May to late September. Sunday to Saturday for a 6 night stay

Authentic western experience with a regular number of cattle drives between the two ranches in Wyoming and Montana, these start in late April and run right the way through the end of the October.  They also offer horse drives in Spring and Autumn, but these are not for the feint hearted as the weather can be brutal.  In summer time they offer ranch stay weeks which will include general herd maintenance, fence inspection, salt lick replacement and simple vetinary tasks, but still plenty of riding available.  These drives are over reservation land so no alcohol is permitted.    Destination Airport : Billings.  Advanced riders recommended.   Max guests : 15

Located the east gate of Yellowstone Park and Cody.  A number of family sized cabins spread along the creek which runs through the ranch.  Challenging riding over steep terrain, but excellent views throughout the surrounding area.  Good food and BYOB,  try the swimming pool which has one of the best views of Wyoming.  70 horses, 5-10 day pack trips offered. 5.  VEE-BAR GUEST RANCH

    

Located west of Laramie in the Snowy Range Mountains.  This ranch offers a high standard of cabins on the banks of a sparkling creek.  The main lodge has been carefully restored and its western heritage preserved.  There is plenty of horseback riding and as the family run a nearby working ranch you may also find yourself rounding up cattle.  The ranch claims to have one of the best riding programmes to be found at any guest ranch, with an option to campout overnight.  Varied menu of home cooked food.  This ranch has an excellent saloon where you may join new found friends. Located in the mountains of western Wyoming, the ranch is at an elevation of 6200ft. 17 miles to the west is Yellowstone Park and right on the doorstep of the Shoshone National Forest. So, no shortage of outstanding riding country. Rides are in the morning and afternoon plus an all day ride too. There are 10 one to three bedroomed cabins located alongside the creek, all have bathrooms and a porch for watching the world go by.  During the week you may visit Yellowstone and the Cody Night Rodeo, for an additional charge a rafting expedition can also be arranged, skeet shootings and possible overnight pack trip. .
