WYOMING RANCH HOLIDAYS

A frontier world of mountains and ranches, hunting and trapping rodeos and round-ups.  Wyoming is nicknamed "The Cowboy State" because for more than a century cattle raising has been the main occupation.

It still takes a rider on horseback to herd cattle, in the cowboy towns most people wear stetsons, blue jeans and boots, and stores have hitching posts for the horses.  Yellowstone, the world's first national park with it's famous geysers, hot springs, mudpots, waterfalls and mountains has enthralled travellers since 1872.  A further week is recommended touring in a car in Wyoming or driving over to South Dakota.

SPOTTED HORSE RANCH, WYOMING - NEW FOR 2008   

Just 28 miles south of town of Jackson Hole is the Spotted Horse Ranch, a small Guest Ranch accommodating just 34 visitors. Explore the wilderness surrounding the Ranch through a float trip, horseback ride, overnight trip or a hike. Individual cabins are of log construction with the modern conveniences of home. The ranch is home for the famous Appaloosa Horse. Bred originally by the Nez Perce Indians..  Excellent guides can help you in selecting the perfect horse for your ability.  Fish along the banks of the Hoback, only steps away from your cabin, also practice in the trout pond or take a float trip down the Snake, Hoback, Salt, New Fork or Green River.  Rates include a white water or scenic raft trip, the rodoe in town on a Saturday night in summer, two cookouts with live entertainment, fly casting lessons, beer and wine during appertizers and a trip to Granite Hot Springs. .

1.  RANGER CREEK GUEST RANCH, SHELL                     

This ranch is set in the spectacular Big Horn Mountains in north central Wyoming. The road up from the Shell Valley winds around the sides of the pass, do stop and admire Shell Falls on your way up to the ranch. At 8300ft give yourself time to acclimatise to the height – they ride to over 10,000ft. The property is on National Forest land and so it is totally unspoilt, the views are truly stunning. They have the ability to ride over a million and a half acres ! Around the lodge are five 2 to 5 berth rustic cabins with en-suite facilities. Meals are a highlight of your stay - gourmet cooking is on the menu. Taking a horse out from the ranch in any direction will put you in the most diverse and beautiful terrain. During the summer, there are rafting trips and a visit to the Cody Night Rodeo plus mountain biking, hiking, fishing, a halter making workshop, evening campfires with entertainers. Open from May to late September. Sunday to Saturday for a 6 night stay

2.  BITTERROOT GUEST RANCH - Excellent for good riders

Highly recommended for experienced riders, ranch set in a remote valley bordering the Shoshone National Forest and the Wind River Indian Reserve.   Cattle, purebred Arabians and quarter horses are raised and over 65 horses cater for all levels of riding ability, english and western style.  The riding terrain is extremely varied, charming log cabins, good food - 100 miles from Jackson Hole!  Sunday-Sunday.  Open May-Sept. 3.  DRYHEAD WORKING RANCH   Click for more info

Authentic western experience with a regular number of cattle drives between the two ranches in Wyoming and Montana, these start in late April and run right the way through the end of the October.  They also offer horse drives in Spring and Autumn, but these are not for the feint hearted as the weather can be brutal.  In summer time they offer ranch stay weeks which will include general herd maintenance, fence inspection, salt lick replacement and simple vetinary tasks, but still plenty of riding available.  These drives are over reservation land so no alcohol is permitted.    Destination Airport : Billings.  Advanced riders recommended.   Max guests : 15

 4.  RIMROCK DUDE RANCH

Located the east gate of Yellowstone Park and Cody.  A number of family sized cabins spread along the creek which runs through the ranch.  Challenging riding over steep terrain, but excellent views throughout the surrounding area.  Good food and BYOB,  try the swimming pool which has one of the best views of Wyoming.  70 horses, 5-10 day pack trips offered. Excellent fishing, early booking recommended due to high number of returning guests.  Open Mid May to Sept.  Sunday-Sunday.  Destination Airport : Cody Max guests : 34

5.  VEE-BAR GUEST RANCH

Located west of Laramie in the Snowy Range Mountains.  This ranch offers a high standard of cabins on the banks of a sparkling creek.  The main lodge has been carefully restored and its western heritage preserved.  There is plenty of horseback riding and as the family run a nearby working ranch you may also find yourself rounding up cattle.  The ranch claims to have one of the best riding programmes to be found at any guest ranch, with an option to campout overnight.  Varied menu of home cooked food.  This ranch has an excellent saloon where you may join new found friends. 7.  THE UXU DUDE RANCH, WAPITI       

Located in the mountains of western Wyoming, the ranch is at an elevation of 6200ft. 17 miles to the west is Yellowstone Park and right on the doorstep of the Shoshone National Forest. So, no shortage of outstanding riding country. Rides are in the morning and afternoon plus an all day ride too. There are 10 one to three bedroomed cabins located alongside the creek, all have bathrooms and a porch for watching the world go by.  During the week you may visit Yellowstone and the Cody Night Rodeo, for an additional charge a rafting expedition can also be arranged, skeet shootings and possible overnight pack trip. . The resident fishing guide will show you some of the best stretches of river to search for those illusive Brownies & Rainbows.  Licenced bar, fishing, rafting, Spa, Shooting, Entertainment, Mountain Biking, Riding, Rodeos and Tours - can accommodate 36 guests - Open from June to September, Sunday to Saturday stay – 6 nights

8.  LAZY L & B DUDE RANCH

A great family ranch offering fine log cabins in what is now known as Scotch Valley after the original settlers from Scotland.  Children have their own supervised programme.  Twelve traditional log cabins are comfortably furnished in a casual western style.  The ranch offers extensive riding, carefully matching horse and rider, for non riders there is angling, swimming in solar heated pool, shooting and hiking.  Guests can enjoy evening entertainment of cowboy songs and poetry.  Open May- Sept.  Sunday-Saturday 6 night stay.  Sept adults only.  . 9.  THE BUCKING S WORKING RANCH

A new ranch to the guest business and therefore all accommodation is relatively new.  Log cabins with western decor and private facilities.  Excellent riding with plenty of cattle work throughout the season either on this ranch or at the neighbours.  Good fishing nearby on world class trout fishing river.  Visit rodeo.  Open May-Oct.  Sunday-Sunday. Destination Airport : Casper.  Max guests 12

One  of the original guest ranches of the west.  A resort ranch in a truely isolated position offering luxurious log cabins with excellent facilities although this is not always reflected in the prices.  Excellent food, bar for meeting new friends, swimming pool in the summer and riding in spectacular countryside.  Open May-Sept.  Max guests 70.  Destination Airport : Sheridan.  Extras to pay for : Riverrafting, mountain bikes and Fishing guides.

11.  LARAMIE RIVER DUDE RANCH

Family run property, high quality accommodation is shared between the main lodge and five log cabins.  Riding is at the top of the agenda here with cattle penning combined with weekly lunch cook outs, a great favourite with many returning guests.  July brings the opportunity to take in a real western rodeo at nearby Cheyenne or Laramie.   Overnight pack trips in the summer at an extra charge.  Open June to Sept.  Destination Airport : Laramie.  Max guests : 25.  Sunday to Sunday or Wednesday to Wednesday; 4 and 3 nights packages available.

12.  KLONDIKE WORKING RANCH

Located near Buffalo, this small working ranch has three cabins of varying sizes some with shared facilities, like most working ranches activities are seasonal culminating with a three week cattle drive in September.  Highly recommended as it is in an acrea of great historical interest.  Caters for every level or rider beginners are taught basic skills and progress on to cattle work, more experienced riders can assist the wranglers, riding with the herd.  Non riders can fish, hike or take a guided tour of the regions many historic sites.  Season mid May to Sept.  Sunday to Sunday.  No children under 14.  Destination Airport : Sheridan, Billings, or Casper.  Extras : Cattle drives £968 pp incl tax and service plus Overnight Mountain camping trip -check when booking.  Max Guests 16
